Sara’s current project,
3,909 Objects at 420 Melrose Street Unit 109: Everything in My Apartment, explores growth, time, and obsession in a different format compared to my other works. In this two-volume book set I explore material culture and accumulation through the meticulous processes of indexing and documenting every object in my living space. This project investigates how objects act as physical manifestations of intangible experience, memory, identity, and function as material evidence of cultural values. Objects within the home—the utilitarian, the sentimental, and the decorative—are the living artifacts of any given time and place. Through my self-curated collection of things I display who I have been, who I am, and who I want to be. By cataloguing my own possessions I hope to explore my own material history and my sentimental attachment to inanimate objects as a way of examining the larger material culture and questioning why I surround myself with so many objects—those that serve a functional purpose and more importantly those that only represent fleeting experiences.
