The Southeast Environmental Task Force needs your help!
Since 2005, residents of Chicago ‘s south side could (literally) breathe a little bit easier, knowing that a landfill moratorium would prevent further dumping of municipal and household waste in Chicago landfills. Unfortunately, Alderman Beale (9th Ward) wants to lift the moratorium which is suppose to be in effect until 2025.
With the landfill moratorium, the city of Chicago has made great strides to improve the quality of life of all of its residents. Sadly, Alderman Beale’s move to encourage more landfills in Chicago will especially hurt our neighbors in Altgeld Gardens , who already spend days smelling foul odors emitted from MWRD wastewater treatment plant. We need to prevent this environmental Injustice from happening!
What can you do to help?
- Tell Ald. Beale that we don’t want our friends in Altgeld Gardens to be buried under trash! (You can contact his ward by calling 773-785-1100 or emailing ward09@cityofchicago.org)
- Email your alderman and insist that the landfill moratorium stay intact.(If you don’t know your alderman, visit http://www.cityofchicago.org/city/en/about/wards.html. Their contact information can be found at http://chicago.legistar.com/People.aspx)
- The mayor needs to know that the south side is not his trash dump. Let him know: http://www.cityofchicago.org/city/en/general/contact.html.
- Visit the Task Force blog (setaskforce.blogspot.com) to stay up to speed on events. We’ll post information as soon as we learn of it.
